Living Off-Grid

Mountain Villa runs entirely on solar and wind energy. There is no connection to the power grid. Water comes from natural mountain springs. Single-use plastic has been eliminated from the property — no plastic bottles, no wrapped amenities, no waste that doesn’t belong here.

This isn’t a sustainability programme bolted onto a hotel. The property was designed this way from the ground up. Every material choice, every system, every daily practice reflects a commitment to leaving the smallest footprint possible.

What this means for your stay: lights work, hot water flows, food is excellent. You just won’t find a minibar, a TV, or a swimming pool. And most guests tell us that’s exactly what they needed.

At The Refectory

Meals at Mountain Villa follow a steady rhythm. A set menu guides the kitchen each day, built around what’s ripe in the garden and what’s fresh from nearby farms. The cooking is simple, home-style Kerala food — the kind that tastes better here than it does anywhere else.

Chef Anoop walks the garden each morning and picks what’s ready. That decides the menu. Expect appam and stew, fish curry, seasonal vegetables, fresh coconut chutney — dishes rooted in local tradition, prepared with care.

On some evenings, the kitchen moves outdoors. Campfire barbecues under open skies, with the valley stretched out below.

Everything is organic and locally sourced. Nothing is wasted — food scraps go back to the compost, which feeds the garden, which feeds the kitchen. It’s a closed loop, and it works.

On the Property

You don’t need to leave Mountain Villa to have a full day.

Five acres of forest and patches of farm  surround the cottages. Walking trails wind through the property and down toward the valley or to the hill top — some short enough for a morning stroll, others long enough to work up an appetite. The kitchen garden is open for wandering. Hammocks are scattered in the right places. And the bonfire pit, once the sun goes down, becomes the social centre of the property.

Birdwatching here is exceptional. The Western Ghats corridor that runs through Vagamon is home to species like the Malabar Grey Hornbill, the Asian Paradise Flycatcher, the Ceylon Frogmouth, and the Great Hornbill. You don’t need to go on a guided expedition — they come to you.

At night, with no artificial light for kilometres, the sky opens up. Stargazing from the lawn is one of those experiences that sounds simple but stays with you.

Beyond the Property

Vagamon and the surrounding Western Ghats offer plenty for those who want to explore. We can arrange any of the following through our local partners.

Paragliding

Tandem flights from nearby launch points at close to 6,000 feet above sea level. A professional pilot handles the launch, flight, and landing. Flights are wind-dependent and may be rescheduled at short notice.

Duration: approx. 2 hours

Off-Road Jeep Trails

Vagamon’s terrain is built for off-roading. We offer five curated circuits, each with a different character:

Uluppuni Circuit — Tea plantations, pine forests, and a sunrise viewpoint above the clouds. One of the most scenic drives in the region. Duration: 4–5 hours

Vagamon Local Circuit — The classic Vagamon tour. Three famous hills (Thangal, Murugan, and Kurisumala), pine forests, and rolling meadows. Duration: 3–4 hours

Birding  - The hills and dales have a variety of exotic birds that are a feast to the eye including the Malabar Grey Horn-bill, the Malabar Parakeet, the Spotted Dove, the Asian Paradise Flycatcher, the Ceylon Frog Mouth, the Great Horn-bill and the Hill Myna

Duration: As you wish
