Journey to the Clouds: The Making of Mountain Villa

Cover of ‘Journey to the Clouds’, a book tracing the creation of Mountain Villa and the vision

Our Story

 A Vision Rooted in Nature

Some journeys begin with a destination in mind. Ours started with a dream—a dream to create a retreat where nature thrives, where people find peace, and where sustainability isn’t just a concept, but a way of life.

For years, city life in Mumbai kept us tethered to the fast lane, but something was missing. We longed for silence, fresh air, and a connection to the land. That longing led us to Vagamon, Kerala, a place of misty mountains, rolling meadows, and untouched wilderness. Here, among the clouds, we found the perfect setting to build Mountain Villa—a sanctuary that blends seamlessly with nature.

🔹 Explore Our Story -  Journey to the Clouds: The Making of Mountain Villa

The Land We Fell in Love With

The first time we set foot on what is now Mountain Villa, it was wild, unstructured, and waiting to be revived. But we saw the potential—not in what we could change, but in what we could preserve.

  • A breathtaking hilltop with panoramic views stretching across five Kerala districts.
  • Lush, untouched greenery bordering the historic Kurushumala Ashram estate.
  • A peaceful escape, yet just a short drive from Vagamon town.

It was the perfect place to bring our vision to life.

Building with Purpose

Creating Mountain Villa was not just about building cottages—it was about ensuring that every step of the process remained true to our values of sustainability and responsible tourism.

  • Minimal impact construction – We restored existing stone structures instead of building new ones.
  • ️ Off-grid energy – 100% powered by solar and wind.
  • ️ Water sustainability – Sourced from natural mountain springs.
  • ️ Zero waste policy – Eliminating single-use plastics and food waste.

Every decision, from choosing materials to planting trees, was made with the land’s well-being in mind.

Off-road challenges in building mountain villa

Challenges Along the Way

Building a self-sustaining retreat in a remote location wasn’t easy.

The last stretch of the journey—a 2.5 km off-road trail—made material transport difficult.
🌦️ Weather in Vagamon is unpredictable, delaying progress.
Finding skilled craftsmen who understood our sustainable vision took time.

But every hurdle strengthened our commitment to creating something meaningful and lasting.

Looking Ahead – The Future of Mountain Villa

Mountain Villa is always evolving. As we continue this journey, we have exciting plans for the future:

Expanding our organic farming & permaculture initiatives.
Introducing new earth cottages for an even deeper eco-living experience.
Hosting eco-retreats, wellness programs & workshops.
Strengthening community partnerships to support local artisans and farmers.
